Italy – a land of longing! For centuries, it has captivated artists from all over the world – including Strauss: “From Italy” testifies to his “feelings at the sight of the magnificent natural beauties of Rome and Naples,” evokes “fantastic images of vanished splendor, feelings of melancholy and pain in the midst of the sunniest present,” but is “not a musical travel guide.” Respighi, on the other hand, inspired Gregorian chant. His violin concerto combines the simplicity, austerity, and antiquity of the chorales with late-Romantic tonal sensuality. Opposites are then united in “These Worlds in Us.” Mazzoli tells a story of pain and happiness “that is completely new and yet strangely familiar.”
