Join UCR Orchestra for a sweeping musical journey to places both near and very, very far. Dvořák’s beloved ‘New World’ Symphony, his most popular work, was composed during his 1890s sojourn in the United States. He wove into his fiery, vibrant, deeply-felt symphonic tapestry styles that he thought most vividly evoked the musical soul of America—especially his impressions of African-American spirituals, a controversial choice at the time and for decades after. Mendelssohn’s ‘Hebrides’ Overture evokes an ancient cave where sound ricochets off dark walls and wind-swept Northern seas crash and roll. Grieg’s buoyant Norwegian Dances celebrates a lively folk culture. And Missy Mazzoli’s stunning Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres) composed in 2014, uses the orchestra, twelve harmonicas, gentle other-worldly dissonances, and slow pulsations of consonance to transport us into a gorgeous, dramatic ambience of outer space.
